As with many of Charles Conlon's fascinating photos, this terrifically rare mid-1910s shot of the Big Train throwing lightly at the foot of a hill on which half-prone spectators lounge while taking in the warm sun was picked up by the Harris & Ewing wire service. 5 x 7" photo has both Thompson's early "10 Spruce Street, New York" stamp and the H&W stamp. Any new material on Johnson was highly desired, and the copywriter went overboard in the attached caption calling him the "Star Pitcher of the American League" and "one of the most popular men in Washington," while stressing that "This is a new photograph." This photo almost sparkles with a lovely sepia tone enhancing its true antique quality and remains NRMT.
