Clara Barton was a hospital nurse in the American Civil War, a teacher, a patent clerk and the founder of the American Red Cross. Presented is a 1900 Clara Barton signed and inscribed cut album page. Throughout her life, Barton was involved in numerous humanitarian causes and in advocacy for civil rights. An incident that helped to shape Barton's life occurred when she was a ten-year-old living in North Oxford, Massachusetts, and her older brother fell off a roof, sustaining severe head injuries. Clara Barton informally began her nursing career when she nursed her brother back to a full recovery as she learned to administer prescription drugs to him and provide nursing assistance to him.
In the American Civil War, Barton served as a nurse, even though she had had, as was typical for the times, no formal training in nursing. Barton often served close to the actual combat in numerous Civil War battles, such as Antietam, the Second Bull Run, and Fredericksburg. Once, when there were no bandages to be had, Barton successfully improvised by using corn husks. Barton once said of her Civil War nursing, "If our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them." After a trip to Europe and meeting with representatives of the International Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, Clara Barton returned to the United States and founded the American Red Cross, and she was the President of the organization from its founding in 1881 until 1904. Later, she came to know Susan B. Anthony and became involved in the Women's Suffrage movement. She came to know Frederick Douglass and also became involved in civil rights for African Americans. Clara Barton passed away in 1912.
