"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time," advised Thomas Alva Edison, whose dogged persistence in never giving up led to his invention of the phonograph, the movie camera, and some early versions of the light bulb. Presented is an opportunity to possess a signed 1929 check by Thomas Edison, the absolute icon of American invention. Edison opened his first laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1876, and he later opened labs in West Orange, New Jersey, and at Fort Myers, Florida. The most prolific of inventors, Edison's near maniacal, never-give-up spirit meant that his trial-and-error experiments led to an incredible 1,093 U.S, patents. The offered signed check measures approx. 3.5x8.5". The machine printing on the check, in part, reads, "EDISON BOTANIC RESEARCH CORPORATION/WEST ORANGE N.J./to SAVINGS INVESTMENT 7 TRUST CO./EAST ORANGE, N.J." The check is written to Joseph V. Liemba in the amount of "$99.40" and the check is dated "February 11, 1929." On the line on the check over "PRES.-VICE PRES.," Edison used black ink from a steel-tip fountain pen to sign as "Thos A Edison." The check exhibits some slight darkening. The check also has some tearing and repairs: There is a partial tear of approx. 2.5" under the treasurer's signature, another partial tear, of approx. an inch, to the left of Edison's signature, and a few other small, partial tears, and some repairs, but the Edison signature is not affected by the tears. Except for the aforementioned imperfections, the check is in very good condition. The check was cashed, and it has been encapsulated. It comes with a JSA LOA, Cert. # YY85943.
