Offered is the chance to possess a 1974 Major League All-Star Game ring presented to Bobby Murcer, an outfielder who played 17 Major League seasons: New York Yankees (1965-66 & 1969-74 & 1979-83), San Francisco Giants (1975-76), and Chicago Cubs (1977-79). Murcer was from Oklahoma, the same state in which Mickey Mantle was born, and Murcer was signed to a Yankee contract by scout Tom Greenwade, the same scout who signed Mantle. Like Mantle, Murcer was initially a shortstop in the minor leagues, and also like Mantle, he later switched to center field. There was a great deal of pressure on Murcer, who was being called "The Next Mantle" by some commentators. Although Murcer never rose to the heights of Mantle, Bobby Murcer did become a very good player who sometimes had excellent seasons. He was a 5-time All-Star, in consecutive years from 1970-74, who batted a career .277 with 252 homers and 1,043 RBIs. Murcer had a great year in 1971 when he batted .331 with 25 home runs and 94 RBIs, and led the NL in both OBP (.427) and OPS (.969). He had another fine season in '72, batting .292 with 33 home runs and 96 RBIs. That year, Bobby won a Gold Glove for his work in center field, and he finished 5th in the AL MVP race. In 1974, when Murcer was awarded this All-Star ring, Bobby batted .274 with 10 homers and 88 RBIs.
The offered All-Star ring is a size 10.5/11. The ring has a purple stone in the center of the ring face. On the right shank is a baseball image, perhaps on the image of a flag, and below that the imprinted word "baseball." On the left shank is imprinted, "All Star 1974." "10K" is initialed in the band.
