Addendum (7/30/10:29 am). Please note, although it is not listed on the PSA label, this image of Johnson was used in the production of his 1921-1922 Schapira Bros. Big Show Candy card.

Walter Johnson, the storied "Big Train," had 417 wins, second all-time (behind only Cy Young, with 511) in Major League history. Displayed is a 1924 Walter Johnson Type I Underwood & Underwood photo. A Hall of Fame right- hander, Johnson, also nicknamed "Barney," was 6'1". A typical man has a wingspan equal to his height, so that Johnson's expected wingspan would be 73". Yet, Johnson's wingspan was an incredible 78.5". That gave him a tremendous pitching advantage, as his unusually long arms enabled him to rear back and use a whip-like motion, snapping the ball towards home plate with a fastball, that according to Ty Cobb, actually "hissed" as it passed the plate. Johnson played in the Major Leagues from 1907-27, all with the Washington Senators. His 417 wins compared to 279 losses. He had a career 2.17 ERA with 3,508 strikeouts, the MLB record for over 55 years until broken by three Hall of Fame pitchers - in order - Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, and Gaylord Perry, during the 1983 season. Johnson won three (Pitching) Triple Crowns.

The Original News Service Photo measures 5.3x10.1". The reverse shows a partially obscured (paper loss) copyright by Underwood & Underwood. The suggested "slug line" on back reads, in part: "HE MAY BE PICKED AS 1924's 'MOST USEFUL PLAYER'. Photo of the veteran Walter Johnson, pitcher for the Washington team who has done most to haul the Senators up to the top of the American League pennant race...." The suggested slug line has a machine printed date of "9/17/24." In that '24 season, Johnson was 23-7, leading the AL in wins as the Senators defeated the New York Giants in the World Series to became World Champions. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified TYPE I. The back of the photo has a PSA/DNA sticker (1PO3300). The photo is not completely centered. There is some minor paper loss, a small bit of crinkling, and a very small fold along the bottom margin. Inside the white margins, the photo is in nice condition, and the length of Johnson's extraordinarily long arms is illustrated by the view of his left arm along his side.
