Dick Allen, scheduled to be inducted posthumously into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, 2025, was one of baseball's best hitters during the 1960s and '70s, when pitching dominated. Presented is a 1988 Dick Allen Philadelphia Phillies game worn jersey, with a MEARS Final Grade: A10. Allen played 15 Major League seasons: Philadelphia Phillies (1965-69 & 1975-76), St. Louis Cardinals (1970), Los Angeles Dodgers (1971), Chicago White Sox (1972-74), Oakland Athletics (1977). He was the '64 NL Rookie of the Year with Philadelphia, and the 1972 AL MVP with the Chicago White Sox. The 7-time All-Star played mostly as a first baseman or third baseman. His lifetime MLB batting average was .292 with 351 home runs and a career OPS of .912. One of his nicknames was "Crash" or "Crash Helmet." He wound up with this nickname when, as a home team player for the Phillies, fans would throw fruit or ice at him when he was playing first base. Then, the fans started to increase the danger by throwing flashlight batteries at Allen. To protect himself, Allen started to wear his batting helmet in the field, a form of "crash helmet." Allen's best season was in 1972 with the Chicago White Sox when he won the AL MVP, leading the AL in home runs (37), RBIs (113), OBP (.420), Slugging (.602), and OPS (1.023).

The offered Dick Allen Philadelphia Phillies game worn, flannel home jersey is a white, with red pinstripes. There is a sewn-on white tag in the collar with "Rich Allen" in black, chain stitched script. (Allen preferred to be called Dick rather than Rich or Richie, but the Philadelphia team insisted on calling him Rich or Richie for years at the start of his career). Seven clear buttons are down the front. Across the chest is "Phillies" in red embroidered felt. The left outside tail has a Wilson manufacturer's tag showing size "40." Below that tag is a "Wilson 1968 SET 2" tag. On back is an embroidered felt red uniform number "15" measuring 9.75". The torso measurement is 32" and the chest measurement is 20". The jersey shows heavy use. The offering comes with a MEARS Letter of Opinion (Cert. 322271), with the jersey receiving a MEARS grade: A10. With Allen's Hall of Fame induction scheduled for this summer, increased attention will be focused on the often-misunderstood player who was controversial but well-liked and highly respected by his teammates. Allen's career seems to have been underappreciated by many pundits and fans, but his Hall of Fame induction will surely increase interest in his career and memorabilia.
