Displayed is an individual 1969-70 Chicago Black Hawks Prince of Wales Trophy awarded to the team's trainer, Louis Varga. This offering is an original, individual version of the team award presented for the 1969-70 season, not the actual team award first presented in 1926. The original team trophy was first awarded by Edward, Prince of Wales and later King Edward VIII and the Duke of Windsor. The trophy was first presented to the winner of the first NHL hockey game ever played in New York's Madison Square Garden (1925). As the years went by, it was awarded for various achievements, including winning the NHL playoffs, winning the NHL's American Division (1927-28), winning the NHL regular season championship (1938-67), and winning the East Division regular season championship (1967-74). After several other criteria used to determine the winner of the trophy, the Prince of Wales Trophy is currently awarded to the NHL's Eastern Conference Playoff Champions. The Chicago Black Hawks, under coach Billy Reay, won the East Division '69-70 regular season title with a 45-22-9 record. Hall of Fame center Stan Mikita led the team in scoring with 39 goals and 47 assists for 86 points. Hall of Fame left wing Bobby Hull finished second in team scoring with 38 goals and 29 assists for 67 points. Hall of Fame goalie Tony Esposito won the Vezina Trophy with 2.22 goals against average.

The offered metal trophy has a base measuring approx. 4.5x4.5". There is also a raised image of the Coat of Arms of the Prince of Wales. On the base of the trophy is a "plaque" measuring approx. 2.3x1.75" and reading, "H R H PRINCE of WALES TROPHY/LOUIS VARGA." The other side of the base has a "plaque" measuring 0.75x2.6", reading: "NHL CHAMPIONS/WINNERS 1969-70/CHICAGO BLACK HAWKS." The trophy has some tiny speckling at the top, some surface loss, slight tarnishing in a few places, and a few scratches. The offering weighs 39.5 ounces.
