Displayed is a 1951 ticket stub from when Don Newcombe became the first African American pitcher to win 20 games. The game was a Sept. 29th contest at Philadelphia's Shibe Park when the tall Brooklyn Dodgers righthander shut out the Phillies by a 5-0 score. In defeating Hall of Fame right-hander Robin Roberts, Newcombe went the distance, allowing seven hits and fanning six. The game was crucial to the NL pennant race, with the Dodgers and New York Giants tied for the NL lead. When the two teams finished the regular season in a tie, the Giants won the pennant on the final game of a best-of-three playoff on Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" walk-off three-run home run in the ninth inning against Ralph Branca. Newcombe finished 1951 with a 20-9 record. The ticket stub comes with an approx. 8x10" original photo of Newcombe and Roberts taken in 1956. The ticket stub has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "AUTHENTIC." The stub measures approx. 1.5x2.75", and it is in very good condition.
