Presented is an Oct. 1, 1961, ticket stub from the game at Yankee Stadium in which the Yankees' Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's iconic single-season home run record of 60. The ticket stub was given to the consignor by his uncle who attended the game. Because of American League expansion by two teams, the 1961 MLB regular season consisted of 162 games, rather than the traditional 154 games in 1927, when Ruth set his record. Baseball commissioner Ford Frick, a former ghostwriter for Ruth and the Babe's friend, declared that if Maris or Mantle, both in pursuit of Ruth's record that season, did not break Ruth's record within 154 games, any eventual record would have an asterisk placed after it. Actually, MLB had no official record book at that time and records were kept by entities such as The Sporting News. In any event, Mantle fell out of contention for the record because of an abscess on his hip, and Maris came into the season's final game, against the Boston Red Sox, tied with Ruth at 60 homers. In the final game, Maris flew out to Carl Yastrzemski in the 1st inning. In the 4th inning, Maris hit a 2-0 pitch by Red Sox starter Tracy Stallard about ten rows deep into the right field seats to break Ruth's record. The offered stub measures approx. 1.5x3". It reads, in part, "ENTER GATE 6/GAME NO. 61/LOWER BOX SEAT $3.50/SUN. OCT.1/1961/RAIN CHECK." Hand printed, in blue ink from a ballpoint pen, and written by an unknown hand on the stub: "MARIS HIT HOME RUN #61 - RECORD FOR 162 GAMES...." The stub exhibits some expected darkening from the passage of time. The ticket stub has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "STUB VG 3(MK)."
