Rare original Type I photograph of Bill Russell taken in 1959 that was later used in the production of Russell's equally rare 1968 Topps Test card. This is, to the best of our knowledge, one of only four Type I examples of this photo and just the second we have ever offered (the first appeared as Lot 1162 in our 2023 Fall Classic Auction, where it realized $7,878). The photo, along with two other Bill Russel Type I photos in this auction, was just recently discovered in the personal collection of a former New England sports photographer and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately (submitted to PSA by Lelands).

The striking image pictures Russell as a member of the Celtics as he dribbles straight at the camera. Russel's name is stamped on the reverse. Although this is an original Type I photograph dating from 1959, it was later used for press purposes in both the 1980s and 1990s, as noted by two date stamps on the reverse. One of the date stamps appears on an affixed newspaper clipping featuring the image of Russell offered here. The photo (8x10") displays a small chip in the lower left corner, a few minor border/corner wrinkles, and a small area of both light adhesive and paper residue near the bottom border.
