Extraordinary Type I game-action photo of Bill Russell from his 1956 rookie season with the Boston Celtics. Russell is pictured in mid-air as he soars over Philadelphia Warriors guard Ernie Beck to secure a rebound. According to a clipped newspaper caption affixed to the reverse, this photo was taken on December 26, 1956, during a home game against the Philadelphia Warriors at the Boston Garden. Russell scored 15 points with 34 rebounds in the Celtics' 120-97 win that night. The photo, along with two other Bill Russel Type I photos in this auction, was just recently discovered in the personal collection of a former New England sports photographer and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately (submitted to PSA by Lelands).

An "Associated Press" credit stamp appears on the reverse, along with two "Providence Journal Co." credit stamps. Both of the Providence Journal stamps include a date, with the earliest reading "Dec 27 56." As mentioned earlier, a newspaper clipping, providing the caption for this photo when it was originally published, is affixed to the reverse with clear tape. The photo (7x9.25") displays light creasing throughout, a few small edge tears, and editorial shading/outlining to each of the player images.
