Presented is a 1980 Butch Hobson Boston Red Sox game worn home jersey that the hard-nosed third baseman wore during his final season with the Red Sox. Clell Lavern "Butch" Hobson was a two-sport star at Alabama University. In addition to baseball, he played quarterback for coach Bear Bryant on the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Hobson played eight Major League seasons: Boston Red Sox (1975-80), California Angels (1981), New York Yankees (1982). His best Major League season was 1978, when he hit .265 with 30 home runs and 112 RBIs for the Red Sox. In his final Red Sox season, when this jersey was game worn, he was suffering from injuries, including a chronic pain in his elbow, and he batted only .228 with 11 homers. Hobson finished his career by playing a season for the California Angels in 1981 and a season in 1982 for the New York Yankees. Hobson also managed the Red Sox from 1982-84. The knit home jersey has "Red Sox" across the chest in red letters with navy blue trim. Seven silver-white buttons run down the front. Red trim flanks the buttons. The bottom left outside tail has a sewn-on year tag, as "80." The back has a number "4" in a red numeral with navy blue trim. The collar has a Wilson manufacturer's tag showing size "42." The inside collar has a number of small stains, possibly from tobacco or coffee. The Boston Red Sox retired the team's number "4" jersey in 1984, in honor of Hall of Famer Joe Cronin, a Red Sox shortstop, manager, and executive. The all-original jersey shows nice use. With the exception of the aforementioned minor imperfection in the collar, the jersey is in EXCELLENT condition.
