Roberto Clemente achieved his 3,000th hit near the end of the 1972 season, and he ended that year's NL schedule with exactly 3,000 safeties. Presented is a February 14, 1972, Roberto Clemente signed gas station receipt from a service station in Clemente's native Puerto Rico. Clemente, who played his entire Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, was an amazing all-around player who batted a lifetime .317, was a 4-time NL batting crown recipient, a 15-time All-Star, and a key member of two Pittsburgh Pirates World Champions. He had a terrific throwing arm and won 12 Gold Gloves. Clemente died, on December 31, 1972, while he was a passenger in a plane that he had arranged to take emergency supplies to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. He was posthumously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. The offered receipt measures approx. 4x6". Machine-printed on the receipt: AGUSTIN ESSO SERVICE/RIO PIEDRAS, PUERTO RICO. Handwritten by an unknown hand in blue ballpoint is, in part, "$8.00", for "Gals (gallons), Gasolina (gasoline)." Clemente signed in blue ballpoint. The offering comes with a JSA Authentication for the autograph.
