Original Type I photograph capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Carl Hubbell warming up on the sideline at the Polo Grounds. This image was featured in the newspapers both on the day of and the day after his historic performance in the 1934 All-Star Game. We know that because affixed to the reverse are two partial newspaper clippings that featured this image. The first is partially covered by the second, but the caption reads "Carl Hubbell, New York Giants southpaw, will start game for National League all-stars against American league at the Polo Grounds today." Hubbell made history in that game, which took place on July 10th, by striking out, in succession, five of the greatest hitters in baseball history: Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin. The paper then used the same image the next day, as noted by the date stamp reading "July 11 1934." This image of Hubbell was also featured several times in print two years later, both during the August pennant race and just prior to the World Series (as noted by several different 1936 date stamps and the second newspaper clipping). The photo (7.25x8.75") displays evidence of its multi-year use, including small edge tears, tack holes along the perimeter, editorial markings on the front, light creasing, and a small piece of tape applied along the right border. Encapsulated as Type I Authentic by PSA.
