Classic cover art for Opening Day battle between the National and American Leagues with League Presidents Warren Giles and Joe Cronin watching them battling it out. Commissioner Ford Frick acts as umpire. Branch Rickey sits on the sidelines waiting it out for a year as the head of "Continental Loop" upstart league. This 15x14" pen and ink was a published piece in the Sporting News and auctioned several years back. One of the most important yet unsung baseball artists, Ray Gotto was creator of immortal baseball comic books "Ozark Ike" and "Cotton Woods." His high point was his work for the Sporting News, of which this piece was one. Ray was paid $1,000 for his creation of the New York Mets skyline logo which has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Ray died penniless in 2003, the billion-dollar team refusing multiple requests for aid.
