Series of vignettes celebrating Old Spring Training: 1919 Babe Ruth hitting a 500-foot home run in Tampa, Cap Anson, Ned Hanlon, Wilbert Robinson, Casey Stengel, John McGraw, Tris Speaker and more. Inside front cover 18x23" pen and ink was a published piece in the March 2, 1960, issue of the Sporting News and auctioned several years back. Comes with original tear sheet. One of the most important yet unsung baseball artists, Ray Gotto was creator of immortal baseball comic books "Ozark Ike" and "Cotton Woods." His high point was his work for the Sporting News, of which this piece was one. Ray was paid $1,000 for his creation of the New York Mets skyline logo which has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Ray died penniless in 2003, the billion-dollar team refusing multiple requests for aid.
