"1962 Spring Crop" Sporting News Original Art by Ray Gotto. Managers of the Major Leagues are looking for what they need as the proverbial needle in a haystack. Led by the debut of the 1962 Mets' Casey Stengel with a bag of money for pitching and Danny Murtaugh needing Law and Face "back in 1960 form." Entitled "Training Camp Shakedown," this 21x19" pen and ink on heavy artist's board was a published piece in the Sporting News and auctioned by them several years back. Published in the April 11, 1962, issue of The Sporting News and comes with original tear sheet. One of the most important yet unsung baseball artists, Ray Gotto was creator of immortal baseball comic books "Ozark Ike" and "Cotton Woods." His high point was his work for the Sporting News, of which this piece was one. Ray was paid $1,000 for his creation of the New York Mets skyline logo which has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Ray died penniless in 2003, the billion-dollar team refusing multiple requests for aid.
