Each year, a panel of baseball dignitaries selects one player from 30 nominees chosen by each major league team as the recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award. This 1997 award was presented to fellow Puerto Rican star outfielder Juan Gonzalez in 1997 for "best exemplifying the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and contribution to his team." Measuring roughly 8" x 15", the keepsake features Clemente etched in the glass center along with "1997" and "ROBERTO CLEMENTE MAN OF THE YEAR." The base reads: "JUAN GONZALEZ /TEXAS RANGERS" with a TRUE VALUE logo underneath. The memento is in EX-MT condition but for a chip to one corner of the marble base. It comes directly from Gonzalez himself, who was at the height of his popularity and production at this stage of his career, having also earned American League MVP honors in 1996 and 1998. Nice bookends for this coveted trophy. The award was first issued as "The Commissioner's Award" in 1971, but after Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash during a humanitarian mission. Carlos Beltran - coincidentally another native of Puerto Rico - is the most recent winner, having been honored during this past World Series.
