Displayed is a 1914 Royal Tailors page, most likely from a salesman's sample book, featuring Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. Royal Tailors was founded in 1888 by Joseph Vehon, a Polish immigrant. The company lasted until at least the second decade of the Twentieth Century and had its headquarters in Chicago and New York. The firm featured custom-made men's clothing and at its peak employed over 2,000 tailors. This sample page measures a large 16x19", and it very colorfully shows the great New York Giants righthander Christy Mathewson in a three-button, double-breasted overcoat. The book from which the offered page was taken included clothing for the 1914-15 Fall and Winter seasons, and it also included photos of other future Hall of Famers, such as Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson, with all of these immortals dressed to the nines in dapper outfits.
Christy Mathewson played his entire Major League career with the New York Giants from 1900-16, except for one game in 1916 when he finished his pitching career for the Cincinnati Reds. When Mathewson first played with the Giants, baseball players were often considered crude and uneducated and were socially looked down upon. College educated at Bucknell, and clean living, Mathewson was considered a player that was worthy of admiration, and he was used as a model of decorum. Mathewson wrote books, acted on stage, and was widely admired. Mathewson had a lifetime 372 wins (4th all-time), 78 shutouts (3rd all-time), and a 2.13 ERA (5th all-time). He threw a pair of no-hitters, won two pitching Triple Crowns, and was a key player on the 1905 New York Giants World Championship.
The offered page shows Mathewson, dressed elegantly, in front of the clubhouse (locker room) of the New York Giants. A circular, inset image of Mathewson pitching is to Matty's left. Giants players in the clubhouse are in various stages of baseball uniforms, and they are juxtaposed against the "New York gentleman" look of Mathewson outside the locker area. A sign on the wall reads, "No Admittance Except Players." A notice near the bottom of the page reads, "Copyright 1914 by the Royal Tailors, Chicago-New York." The bottom of the page reads, "The immortal Christy Mathewson votes the Royal Ticket." On the edges of the page appears the Royal Tailors logo. The page is attractively matted and framed to 22.25x25". The page is in EXCELLENT condition.
