Presented is a broadside poster for an Oct. 30, 1913, game in Bonham, Texas, between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants as part of the famous, momentous 1913-14 World's Baseball Tour. The tour was organized by John McGraw, the New York Giants manager and Charles Comiskey, the owner of the White Sox. It started off in Cincinnati on Oct. 18, 1913, as a railroad tour, heading west with five steel cars, and then continued as a sea voyage that left from Vancouver, Canada, on November 19th. The tour included games in the United States, Canada, Japan, China, the Philippines, Egypt, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. Although billed as the Giants against the White Sox, many of the players on each team's small roster were "on loan" from other teams. The Giants did have Giants stars such as Fred Merkle at first base and Larry Doyle at second base. Also, on the Giants team was Jim Thorpe, a Giants reserve, and the star of the 1912 Olympics and college and pro football. Hall of Fame Giants pitcher Christie Mathewson was on the train tour of the Western United States, he but left the tour before the sea voyage to Japan. On the Chicago squad was famed future "Black Sox" Buck Weaver, then a shortstop. Hall of Fame outfielders Tris Speaker (Boston Red Sox) and Sam Crawford (Detroit Tigers) were loaned to the White Sox for the tour. The tour ended in New York on March 6, 1914. Overall, the White Sox won 24 games, the Giants won 20 times and there were two ties.

The poster measures approx. 10x15", framed to 12x17". In part, the poster reads, "NEW YORK - CHICAGO World's Baseball Tour/BONHAM, TEXAS/Thursday, Oct.30/Our "Lefty" Russell will pitch for the Chicago White Sox and Christie Mathewson for the New York Giants/GAME CALLED [starts] at 2 P.M./General Admission - $1.00/Grand Stand - $1.00/Box Seats - $2.50." The poster appears to be attached to an April, 1910, page from the Hotel Alexander, in Bonham. None of the signatures from the hotel registry are of the players on the 1913-14 tour. Mathewson, for an unknown reason, did not actually pitch in the Oct. 30, 1913 game in Bonham. The Giants won the game, 4-1, defeating Lefty Russell, the White Sox pitcher from Bonham. A newspaper box score of the game is affixed to the poster, obscuring the word "BASEBALL" near the top. The words "WELCOME TO BONHAM, TEXAS NEW YORK GIANTS AND CHICAGO WHITE SOX OCTOBER 30TH, 1913" is machine printed on a small paper obscuring a small section of the poster. The poster, over a century old, shows expected darkening, but not to any extreme. The poster has some folds, slight paper loss near the lower middle, some possible glue remnants, about an inch of paper loss in the upper left corner, and a few partial, small tears. The vintage poster makes a great remembrance for this iconic World's Baseball Tour.
