Displayed is a pair of baseball-themed, one sheet movie posters (from the original releases) concerning biopics of Babe Ruth and Dizzy Dean. 1) The 1948 movie poster for The Babe Ruth Story measures 27x40.75". The film was directed and produced by Roy Del Ruth and distributed by Allied Artists, with Allied Artists sometimes also listed as a producer. The film starred William Bendix as Babe Ruth, Claire Trevor as Claire Merritt Hodgson, Ruth's wife, and Charles Bickford as Brother Matthias, the Babe's mentor at the St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, in Baltimore. The poster has images of Ruth (Bendix) and Claire Merritt Hodgson (Claire Trevor), and reads, in part, "THE BABE RUTH STORY/Hats off to THE BABE! The laugh-by-laugh, tear-by-tear, cheer-by-cheer story of America's Most beloved Guy." The picture follows Ruth from his youth at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys through his entry into pro baseball, and his time with the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, and for a half season at the end of his career, his time with the Boston Braves. The movie received mostly good reviews upon its release, but in recent years modern reviewers have been critical of the film, contending that it was unrealistic and too sentimental. Ruth was ill when the film was being shot, and the great Bambino passed away only weeks after the movie's release in '48.

2)"THE PRIDE OF ST. LOUIS/THE STORY OF DIZZY DEAN" is what the big print proclaims on the other movie poster, also measuring 27x40.75". Star Dan Dailey, as Dean, is depicted on the poster, pitching and with actress Joanne Dru, as Dean's wife. Also starring in the movie is Richard Crenna, as Dizzy's brother, Daffy Dean. The film was directed by Harmon Jones and produced by Jules Schermer. The film was distributed by 20th Century Fox. The screenwriter was the famed Herman Mankiewicz who also wrote The Pride of the Yankees, about Lou Gehrig. The film shows Dean's early years in Arkansas, and his terrific but very short success as a star pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Then, the movie follows Dean suffering a broken toe, trying to come back too soon after the injury, and then injuring his throwing arm, which never really recovered. Then the film details Dean's descent into gambling and drinking, followed by his redemption as a baseball broadcaster. The movie gathered generally positive reviews. Both posters have typical horizontal folds and some chipping and tears at the edges. These posters would look great if they were linen backed.
