Presented is the opportunity to possess a rare 1922 Babe Ruth children's hat, along with a copy of each of three advertisements about the offered hat. In 1922, Ruth was in his third season as a New York Yankee, after being sold after the 1919 season to the Bronx Bombers from the Boston Red Sox. The year before, in 1921, Ruth, a great pitcher with the Red Sox, was only in his second season as essentially a full-time outfielder, yet Ruth hit 59 home runs, the record only until the Bambino hit 60 in 1927. Ruth also added 168 RBIs and a .378 batting average in 1921, so he was clearly the most popular player in baseball. The gray boys cap is a size 7, as a tag near the inner hatband attests. The front of the cap, above the bill, has an approx. 3.1x0.75" sewn-on nameplate, with embroidered black or navy-blue embroidered letters reading "BABE RUTH." Inside the cap is a brown hatband, showing wear, and on an interior panel is "Babe Ruth" along with an image of him in the follow through of a swing. The cap shows a few stains, sweat and otherwise.
The related advertisement photocopies: 1) An ad, from The Chat, enlarged to approx. 5x5", that reads,"Be the First Boy to Wear the 'Babe Ruth' cap! It's a school and play cap made like Ruth's own baseball cap, and has the name "BABE RUTH" embroidered on the front of every cap, and Babe Ruth's picture and signature [simulated] in the lining. Price Only $1.00/L. M'ESERITZ/857 Flatbush Ave. and Martease Street/In Flatbush [Brooklyn] since 1903." 2) An ad from The Washington Herald, Wed. Apr 19, 1922, reading, in part, "Every Boy Will Want a BABE RUTH CAP, $1... You may choose from these colors - gray, with the name in red or black - brown, with name in red or white - navy, with name in red or white. Sizes 6 1/8 to 7, Boys' Section. Fourth floor." 3) From the South Bend News-Times Sun, Mar 19, 1922, an advertisement enlarged to approx. 6.5x10" reads, in part, "...The well-dressed man will want a Babe Ruth cap....Then for the boys there is a juvenile Babe Ruth model. The youngsters are tickled to death with them. The price on the boys cap is just $1.00." No manufacturer is listed on the Babe Ruth Cap itself or in the enclosed advertisements.
The hat has some tiny surface loss of material, but it is in overall very good condition, and the advertisements give a wonderful, vintage flavor to the offering.
