Babe Ruth became ill from throat cancer in 1946, and he passed away on August 16, 1948. At the time before of his passing, he was a patient at New York's Memorial Hospital. Presented is a "death bed" original photo negative of Ruth, photographed with a nurse at Memorial Hospital in New York City not long before his death. Doctors had tried hormone therapy, surgery, and even the then-innovative treatments of sequential radiation and chemotherapy in their efforts to save Ruth. They even tried female hormones and experimental treatments. For a while, Ruth went into remission, but he could not be saved. His body was in state at Yankee Stadium for two days, viewed by untold thousands, and there was a funeral mass for him at New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral. An estimated 100,000 persons viewed his funeral cortege as it made its way to Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in Hawthorne, New York.

The displayed photo negative measures approx. 3.8x4.8". Ruth is not literally in in a hospital bed, but in a wheelchair, sitting up. The negative is in excellent condition.
