Spectacular original film negative capturing five members of the New York Yankees sitting on the steps of the dugout prior to a 1927 World Series game at Forbes Field. Lou Gehrig is clearly pictured farthest to the left. While we cannot be certain, we believe the other four Yankee players pictured here, left to right, are Wait Hoyt, Bob Meusel, Mark Koenig, and Joe Dugan (sitting at field level, behind Koenig). Gehrig, Meusel, and Koenig, of course, were key members of the team's fabled "Murderers Row" lineup, which consisted of the first six players in the batting order: Combs, Koenig, Ruth, Gehrig, Meusel, and Lazzeri. 

This remarkable image is one of four never-before-seen film negatives capturing members of the New York Yankees at Forbes Field during the 1927 World Series, all of which are featured in this auction. According to our consignor, these film negatives were among dozens stored in a coffee can that was discovered by his father while cleaning out the attic of a house he had recently purchased in 1972. The house was originally built in the 1930s by a family member of Joseph G. Armstrong, who was the former Mayor of Pittsburgh from 1914-18. All the negatives in the can pictured Pittsburgh city scenes or locations, including many baseball images, but the four offered in this auction are the only remaining ones featuring either Ruth or Gehrig.

The Yankees swept the Pirates in four straight games in the 1927 fall classic. Since the first two games were played in Pittsburgh, on October 5th and 6th, the offered negative must date to one of those two games. 1927 World Series images have always been highly prized by collectors. The fact that this is a fresh, new-to-the-hobby example only adds to its appeal.
