Presented is an Ed Charles first National League home run baseball. Charles had come to the New York Mets partway through the '67 season, from the Kansas City Athletics. A third baseman, Charles played for Kansas City from 1962-67 and for the Mets from 1967-69. He had a .263 MLB batting average, with 86 home runs. Known as "The Glider" for his smooth-running style, Charles stayed with the Mets through the team's Miracle Mets 1969 season, when the long-time National League cellar dwellers won the '69 World Series. Charles hit his first National League home run on Friday, June 9, 1967, in a day game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The game was 3-2 in favor of the Cubs and Ray Culp was pitching in relief for Chicago. Charles was the first batter in the top of the 5th inning, and he blasted Culp's first pitch deep into the right field stands to tie the game. Chicago eventually won the contest at 6-5.
An unknown hand has used a black marker to neatly print the following on offered baseball: "First National League Home Run/Hit Off Ray Culp - Chicago Cubs." The ball exhibits nice wear, with some stains, a number of scuffs, and some darkening. The offering comes directly from the family of Ed Charles.
