Presented is a PSA EX 5 (Pop 4, 1 Higher) ticket stub from the game when Roberto Clemente got his 3,000th and final regular season Major League hit, in the last regular season game of his career. Also included is a fully scored program from the game. Born in 1934 in Puerto Rico, Clemente played 18 Major Leagues seasons (1955-72), all for the Pittsburgh Pirates. A Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer, he is one of the greatest all-around right fielders in baseball history. As a teenager, he was a javelin thrower, and he was considered to have Olympic potential. Clemente later credited his javelin throwing to developing his cannon-like throwing arm, which helped him win 12 Golden Glove Awards. Clemente was a 4-time NL Batting Champion, and a 2-time World Champion. He hit a career .317 with 240 home runs. Clemente was for many years very involved in charitable work, and he died on Dec. 31, 1972, when he was onboard a Douglas DC-7 plane he had chartered, with emergency supplies for victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua, and the plane crashed into the water off Isla Verde, Puerto Rico.
Clemente notched his 3,000 hit in the 4th inning of a home game at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium against the New York Mets. Clemente struck out in his first at bat of the game, against the Mets' starting left-hander Jon Matlack. In the bottom of the 4th inning, still against Matlack, Clemente doubled to right-center, starting a rally that would eventually lead to a 5-0 Pirates win. In the 5th inning, fellow future Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski pinch hit for Clemente. The Pirates and Clemente later faced the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Championship Series. Clemente had four playoff hits, but the Pirates lost the series in five games. The ticket stub measures 1.25x3.25". The stub has an image of the Pirates logo. The stub reads, in part, "Pittsburgh Athletic Co., Inc./THREE RIVERS STADIUM/SAT. SEPT. 30/1972/RAIN CHECK/TERRACE RESERVED $3.15." The PSA EX 5, POP 4, 1 Higher ticket stub has been encapsulated and PSA Graded (113395729) "EX 5." The included program reads. "World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates 1972 Official Scorebook/Tree Rivers Stadium." The program measures 8.25x10.75", and it has 40 pages, including covers. Clemente appears on the cover. An unknown hand has scored the game in blue ballpoint ink, and the program scorer added a large "#3,000" in the scorecard, with an arrow pointing to Clemente's hit as written in the scorecard. The program is in EXCELLENT condition. Together, the ticket stub and the scorecard make an outstanding remembrance of Clemente's historic, and in retrospect highly poignant, moment of glory.
