Charlie Finley was the extremely innovative owner of the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics. He was generally disliked by fellow owners, players, writers, and fans. He had his stadium's box seats painted yellow and the foul poles painted a bright pink. He advocated orange baseballs, and they were actually tried during an exhibition season. He pushed for night World Series games, and it actually came about. He also advocated the designated hitter rule, and eventually that renovation became the norm. In 1970, Finley obtained permission to have the Athletics used gold-colored bases for the team's home opener on April 13th. The Athletics won that game, 2-1, over the Milwaukee Brewers, but Bowie Kuhn, the Commissioner of baseball, banned the bases after that single game.
