Original glass plate negative capturing Ty Cobb at bat during a game against the New York Highlanders at Hilltop Park. Cobb is pictured in his follow-through swing as his head tracks the direction of the ball. Although no year is listed, the combination of the two uniform styles for each club shown here conclusively date it to the 1911 season. 1911 was perhaps Cobb's finest overall season, as he registered career-highs in batting average (.419), RBI (127), hits (248), and runs (148). Those numbers helped earn him the Chalmers Award (equivalent of today's MVP Award) at season's end. The glass negative (7x5") displays some tiny emulsion loss along the perimeters, as well as a few tiny specks of what appears to be red paint on either side (not affecting Cobb's image).
