Walter Johnson, known as "the Big Train," was an incredible right-hander who won 417 games, the second most in Major League history. Offered is a beautiful, vintage, circa 1920s Walter Johnson/Brown Brothers Type II photograph of the universally respected gentleman who spent his entire playing career (1907-27) with the Washington Senators. Johnson still holds the MLB record for shutouts (110). The 2-time AL MVP was a 3-time winner of the Pitching Triple Crown. He finished with 3,508 strikeouts, the MLB record when he retired from pitching. The offered photo provides a fascinating view of one of the reasons that the 6'1" hurler had such a legendary fastball, one that Ty Cobb said "hissed" as it went by a batter. The photo shows Johnson's amazingly long arms dangling along his sides. The average person has a wingspan equal to that person's height, so that the typical man of 6'1" would have a 73" wingspan. Yet, in 1913 Baseball Magazine measured Johnson's wingspan and found it to be 78.5", 4.5" longer than the average wingspan for a 6'1" person. No wonder Johnson could throw so hard: He arm wingspan, coupled with his motion, made his arm a virtual "whip" that propelled his blistering pitches. The 5x7" photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE II AUTHENTIC." The image was taken circa 1914, but it was printed in the 1920s from the original negative. Thus, the offering received the PSA designation as "TYPE II." On back are two Brown Brothers photography stamps and "Walter Johnson," written in pencil by an unknown hand. The photo, with an age of approx. 110 years, shows a very slight darkening, and is still in overall EXCELLENT condition.
