Original glass plate negative capturing Ty Cobb as a member of the Detroit Tigers, circa 1913. This incredible image pictures the legendary "Georgia Peach" displaying his trademark "split-grip" batting stance as he poses on-field during spring training. Several other Tigers players are pictured in the scene as they gather around the batting cage, but Cobb is clearly the focus of the shot. Although no year is listed, the uniform style shown here was worn by the Tigers only in 1912 and 1913, thereby dating it to that narrow two-year span. Cobb was at the peak of his career during that time period, having won the American League batting title in both 1912 (.409) and 1913 (.389). In fact, Cobb was in the midst of a streak that saw him win nine consecutive batting titles (1907-15) and twelve in thirteen years (1907-19). This is easily one of the finest Ty Cobb photographic images we have ever offered and, not surprisingly, it originates from the Brown Brothers Photo Archive. The name "Ty Cobb" is etched along the base of the negative and "Cobb" is written in pencil on the reverse, along with several production/inventory numbers. The glass negative (5x4") displays a small chip in the lower left, along with a tiny area of emulsion loss. There are also two finger smudges in the emulsion on either side of Cobb's image, but neither touches directly upon Cobb. Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.
