Known as "Le Grand Orange" from his time as an orange-haired slugger for the Montreal Expos, Rusty Staub was indeed "The Big Orange," from his muscled, left-handed power to his larger-than-life friendly personality that made him a favorite of both fans and players on every team for which he played. Presented is a 1984 Rusty Staub New York Mets game used blue, short-sleeved, away jersey. Staub played 23 Major League seasons: Houston Colt .45s/Astros (1963-68), Montreal Expos (1969-71 & '79), New York Mets (1972-75 & 1981-85), Detroit Tigers (1976-79), Texas Rangers (1987). With a career 2,716 hits, Staub is the only Major League player to have 500 hits for four teams (Houston, Montreal, New York Mets, and Detroit). Staub batted a lifetime 279 with 298 home runs. He was an outfielder/first baseman who in his later career became a noted pinch hitter. In 1984, when Staub wore the offered jersey, Rusty was used almost exclusively as a pinch hitter, and he batted .264, with a home run and an outstanding RBI ratio of 26 RBIs in only 78 official at bats. The offered polyester, short-sleeved jersey has four tags in the neck: A Rawlings manufacturer's tag showing size 48; Set 1/1984; 2 INCH EXTRA LENGTH; A number/size/set tag reading "10 48 1." Across the chest is "Mets" in sewn-on white script with orange trim. Under the above is a sewn-on "10" in white numerals with orange trim. On back is a sewn-on blue nameplate, with "STAUB" in white letters with orange trim, and under the nameplate is a sewn-on "10" in white numerals with orange trim. The jersey exhibits light use, and it is in EXCELLENT condition. Getty has a photo of the Mets wearing blue jerseys like the offered one in a 1984 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rusty was a prodigious fundraiser for many charitable causes, both during and after his playing career, including substantial fundraising for the families of first responders who died as a result of the 9/11 attacks. Rusty Staub passed away in 2019, and the offered jersey is a fitting remembrance for a fine player and a noted humanitarian.
