Los Angeles Dodgers road jersey worn by pitcher Orel Hershiser during his 1984 rookie season. The gray knit jersey is lettered "Dodgers" across the front and features the number "55" on the left breast and reverse. "Hershiser" is lettered on the reverse, directly above the number. All front and reverse letters are applied in blue on white tackle twill. All front numerals are applied in red tackle twill, while all reverse numerals are applied in blue on white tackle twill. Located in the collar is a "Goodman & Sons 44" label. A 1984 Los Angeles Olympics patch appears on the left sleeve (the patch was worn only during the 1984 season, which conclusively dates the jersey). The jersey is original as issued and displays moderate wear. 

Hershiser started his 1984 rookie season as the club's long relief man, but injuries to the starting staff forced him into the rotation in mid-season. In twenty starts he compiled an 11-8 record, with eight complete games, a league-high four shutouts, and a 2.66 ERA. Also, in a foreshadowing of things to come, he recorded a string of 34 and 1/3 scoreless innings. Those accomplishments helped him finish third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting at season's end.

One of the most dominant pitchers of the late 1980s, Hershiser won 87 games between the years 1985 and 1989 and in 1988 his career-high 23 wins helped lead the Dodgers to a World Championship. It was also in 1988 that Hershiser broke Don Drysdale's record by pitching 59 and 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, a feat that has withstood the test of time and may never be broken given the limited innings made by today's starters. Hershiser finished his career in 2000 with 204 career wins and a lifetime 3.48 ERA.
