Displayed is a 1935 Associated Press Type I photograph of Babe Ruth, in the home uniform of his final team as a player, the Boston Braves. Many are unaware that when the Atlanta Braves' Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth's lifetime home record of 714 in 1974, Hammering Hank was topping the record of a former Brave. Of Ruth's 714 home runs, 659 were hit as a New York Yankee, 49 were blasted for the Boston Red Sox, and six were hit for the Boston Braves in 1935. When he signed with the Braves, Ruth felt he had been promised the Braves managing job in 1936, to replace Bill McKechnie. Ruth's last big hurrah as a player came on May 25, 1935, when he hit three home runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field. In Ruth's final Major League game on May 30, '35, he struggled to field two balls hit near him in the bottom of the first inning and walked off the field - never to return. Ruth then argued with Braves owner Emil Fuchs, the Babe asking for time off to rest his knee and feeling betrayed because he felt Fuchs had no intention of ever naming him manager. Ruth, batting only .181, said he was quitting; and Fuchs told Ruth he was fired. That was the end. In the offered photo, left-to-right: Ruth; is on Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane; Braves manager Bill McKechnie; Charley Dressen, the Cincinnati Reds' manager. The offered photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as TYPE I/AUTHENTIC. The photo is in EXCELLENT condition. A Type I photo of Ruth as a Boston Brave is an unusual and poignant addition to any sports collection.
