Steve Van Buren, known as "Wham Bam" for his penchant for seeking hard contact, often hitting a potential tackler hard and then breaking free for more yardage, was a Pro Football Hall of Fame halfback who was born in La Ceiba, Honduras in 1920 to an American father and a mother of Spanish descent. Offered is a Steve Van Buren original production proof photo that was used for his 1948-49 W469 Exhibit image (PSA Type I). After playing college football at LSU, Van Buren played from 1944-51 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a halfback on offense and on defense a halfback (basically what is now called a cornerback). Although he was a halfback, Van Buren ran like a fullback, often seeking contact and smashing his shoulder into would-be tacklers. In his eight NFL seasons, he won four rushing titles. On his retirement, he was the all-time NFL leader in carries (1,320), rushing yardage (5,880), and rushing touchdowns (69). He was a key member of three NFL East Conference Champions and the '48 and '49 NFL Champions. The offered photo measures approx. 8x10". There is a facsimile Van Buren autograph on front. On back is a National Football League-suggested caption, that mostly mentions Van Buren's statistics, but the suggested slug line is partially obscured by some editing instructions, written by an unknown hand, on a slip of paper. The back also shows a handwritten "7380" in blue pencil by an unknown hand and a stamped "84976." The photo exhibits some wrinkling, and some expected darkening because of the age of the photo, but it is in otherwise nice condition. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." Van Buren was named to the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team, and the photo proof makes a great remembrance for one of the Philadelphia Eagles' greatest stars.
