George Connor was a Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive/defensive tackle and linebacker for the Chicago Bears. Displayed is a circa 1948 George Connor original News Service production proof photograph that was used for Connor's 1948-52 W468 Exhibit card. Connor played football as a lineman for Holy Cross before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Connor played two seasons as a tackle for Notre Dame. He was a key player on Notre Dame's National Champions in both '46 and '47, and he was also the '47 captain of that season's unbeaten team, and he was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. For the Chicago Bears, he was a Pro Bowl selection for four seasons. In '49, in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and their star running back Steve Van Buren, Bears head coach George Halas had Connor play standing up on the outside of the defensive line, and Connor became one of the NFL's first very mobile linebackers. The offered photo measures 7x9.1". In the margins are a few, light editing marks, in pencil. There is a facsimile George Connor autograph. The back has "GEORGE CONNOR/BEARS - TACKLE," written in pencil by an unknown hand. Also on the back is a photographer's stamp, partially obscured by attached editing instructions. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
