Presented is a circa 1950 Mike Goliat original photograph that was used for the Philadelphia Phillies second baseman's image on his 1950 and '51 Bowman cards. Goliat was a right-handed hitter who played in the Major Leagues from 1949-52: Philadelphia Phillies (1949-51), St Louis Browns (1951-52). Goliat's key season was in 1950 when he was the starting second baseman on the famous Phillies' Whiz Kids, the underdog team of mainly very young players who won the National League pennant. Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, the Phillies' center fielder, batted .303 that season and fellow Hall of Famer Robin Roberts, a right-hander, went 20-11. Goliat, in his only Major League season as a regular, batted .234, with 13 home runs and 64 RBIs. Robin Roberts summed up Goliat's contributions to the Whiz Kids: "He was really a third baseman, but he played second for us to fill a need. He was a battler who gave everything he had, and he had a lot of big hits for us off Don Newcombe (star pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Phillies' chief rival for the 1950 flag) the year we won the pennant." The black and white photo measures 8x10". It has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. The photo has some small, light abrasions or smudges near the upper right corner, but it is in otherwise excellent condition.
