Displayed is a circa 1950 original photograph of Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Casimir "Jim" Konstanty, with this photo being used for the images on Bowman's 1950 and '51 Konstanty cards. Konstanty played baseball at Syracuse University and was a teacher before starting his professional career at the age of 24. He pitched for 12 Major League seasons: Cincinnati Reds (1944), Boston Braves (1946), Philadelphia Phillies (1928-54), New York Yankees (1954-56), St. Louis Cardinals (1956). Konstanty had a miraculous 1950 season with the Phillies, known as "the Whiz Kids," an underdog team whose major stars were almost all very young players. A reliever, Konstanty had a 16-7 record, with an NL-leading 22 saves, and also a 2.66 ERA. He was selected as the 1950 National League MVP, still the only reliever to have ever won a National League MVP. After his amazing '50 season, Konstanty's arm was never quite as effective. He finished his MLB career with a 66-48 record with a 3.48 ERA. The offered black & white photo measures 8x10". The original photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. On the back is "Konstanty" written in blue ink by an unknown hand. Also on back is a Phillies stamp. The photo is in excellent condition. The photo is a great image of Konstanty, his wire-rimmed glasses very unusual for the times, making him appear more like in his days as a schoolteacher than as the 1950 NL MVP.
