Presented is a 1930 original photograph of Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx as part of a squad of Philadelphia Athletics sluggers. The 1930 Athletics were skippered by Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack. The back of the Pacific & Atlantic (Chicago Bureau) photo has an attached slug line, which reads, "SLUGGING SQUAD OF THE ATHLETICS. Photo shows, LEFT TO RIGHT: BING MILLER, GEORGE "MICKEY" COCHRANE, AL SIMMONS, and JIMMY [sic] FOXX, HARD-HITTING MEMBERS OF THE PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS, NEARLY CERTAIN OF WINNING THE AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT. 9-18-30 PHOTO TAKEN SEPT. 18, 1930." That season the Athletics did easily win the pennant, finishing with a 102-52 regular season record. As for the "Slugging Squad" in the photo, the suggested caption was not exaggerating the Athletics' prowess: Outfielder Bing Miller hit .303 with 9 homers and 100 RBIs; Hall of Fame catcher Cochrane batted .357 with 10 home runs and 85 RBIs; Hall of Fame outfielder Simmons batted .381 with 36 home runs and 165 RBIs; Hall of Fame First Baseman Foxx batted .335 with 37 home runs and 156 RBIs. In the photo, there is minor paper loss to the top right corner. On the slug line sheet attached to the back, there is some paper loss, some partial tears, and some darkening. Connie Mack, the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics for fifty years and for years a part owner or full owner of the team, was forced by financial circumstances to break up several of his dynasties. The 1929 Athletics won the World Series, then repeated as World Champions in '31, and reached the World Series again in '32. In the Great Depression of the 1930s, Mack was forced to sell off most of the stars of his '29 and '30 World Champion team. The photo has minor paper loss to the top right corner, and over nine decades old photo shows some expected slight foxing and darkening. The 8x10" photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC.
