Presented is a 1930 Al Simmons "closeup" original photograph. Born Alois Szymanski, Simmons was a Hall of Fame outfielder. He played on six Major League teams, but he is most remembered for his years with the Philadelphia Athletics (1924-32, 1940-41, 1944). Simmons has a lifetime average of .324 with 2,927 hits and 307 home runs. He was a 2-time World's Champion with the Athletics, and a 2-time AL batting champion (1930-31). Simmons' best season was 1930, the year of the offered photo. In '30, Simmons won the first of his two consecutive AL batting titles as he batted .381 with 36 home runs, 152 runs scored, and 165 RBIs. His '30 production helped the Athletics to the team's second consecutive World Championship. Simmons batted over .380 in four seasons, and famed baseball analyst and writer Bill James, in his 2001 book called the New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, called Simmons the 71st best player in baseball history. From 1945-49, Simmons was a coach with the Philadelphia Athletics and the right-hand man to Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack. The offered Type I original photo measures 8x10". It was issued from the Newspaper Enterprise Association. The photo is in excellent condition, and it comes with a PSA LOA.
