Presented is a Connie Mack signed photo inscribed to former Major League pitcher John "Dutch" Leonard. Born Cornelius McGillicuddy, the Hall of Fame manager became known as Connie Mack at an early age. Mack played in the Major Leagues for 11 seasons (1886-96), with the Washington Nationals and two other clubs, and he had a lifetime batting average of .245. He was a catcher, one of the first to play right behind the batter rather than further back, near the backstop. He managed the American League's Philadelphia Athletics for the team's first 50 seasons, 1901-50, the longest tenure with one team, or any combination of teams, of any manager in history. Mack was a 5-time World Champion as a manager. He holds the MLB career records for managing wins (3,732), losses (3,948), and games managed (7,755). Mack was unusual in that he managed the Athletics while dressed in civilian clothes, in a suit and tie. On several occasions when he was an owner of the team, he was forced to break up dynasties because he had to sell off stars to keep the franchise afloat. Emil John "Dutch" Leonard was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher who pitched for four teams in his Major League career (1933-53). He has a 191-181 lifetime record with a 3.25 ERA. He faced Mack's Athletics many times as a Washington Senator (1938-46). He is not to be confused with the left-handed Dutch Leonard, who pitched in the American League from 1913-21 & 1924-25. The approx. 7.5x9.5" photo shows Mack in a tie and jacket. The inscription and signature, signed in white, read, "To John 'Dutch' Leonard/Whom I admire very much as an outstanding pitcher/Sincerely Yours/Connie Mack." The signature is 7.5/10. The photo is EXCELLENT.
