Displayed is a 1934 United States Baseball Tour of Japan original team photograph featuring Hall of Fame Yankees Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The 5.5x7.75" black & white photo has a "Matsuya Photo" stamp faintly seen in the bottom right front. The United States sent a 14-player team, with players selected all from the American League, as the National League would not permit players to go. The tour included 12 Japanese cities, and it took place in Nov. and Dec. The Americans won all 18 games. The Japanese All-Stars who were the Americans' opponents eventually became Japan's first professional team, the Yomiuri Giants. Also included in the photo are Japanese players and officials and the wives of the American players. On the U.S. All-Stars: Ruth, Gehrig, Jimmie Fox, Charlie Gehringer, Earl Averill, Lefty Gomez, Eric Mcnair, Bing Miller, Frank Hayes, Harold Warstler, Earl Whitehill, Joe Cascarella, Clint Brown, and Moe Berg. Usually a backup catcher, Berg, who may have been working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), brought along a movie camera and secretly photographed potential bombing targets in case of a future U.S. war with Japan. Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack, then managing the Philadelphia Athletics, was along as an advisor. Ruth had already completed his last season with the Yankees, and in 1935 he would play half a season with the NL's Boston Braves and then retire; but on this Japan Tour, Ruth led all batters on either team with 13 home runs, and he hit .408. Ruth is in the middle row, nine from the left. Connie Mack is on the Bambino's left. Gehrig, in a bow tie, is in the top row, five from the left.
