Displayed is an original photograph showing Babe Ruth leaving the dugout after ceremonies at Yankee Stadium on Babe Ruth Day on April 27, 1947. The Bambino was suffering from throat cancer, but the public only knew that he had been very ill. Before the Yankees' game, Ruth addressed the crowd of 58,339, his voice very hoarse. Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler had visited Ruth in the hospital during the previous winter and he was privately shocked at Ruth's deteriorating condition, so Chandler arranged for every Major League team to celebrate Babe Ruth Day on the same date, and many minor league teams also celebrated Ruth's Day. When speaking before the Yankee Stadium crowd, Ruth had to be supported by two friends as he walked to the field microphone. After the ceremonies, Ruth, draped in a loose coat to conceal his weight loss as well as keep him warm, walked through the dugout to get under the stands to rest a bit before he went out to his box seat to watch the game. Fatigued, he left after seven innings of the Yankees 1-0 loss to the Washington Senators, the game a mere afterthought in view of Ruth's Day. The photo shows Ruth's next-to-last visit to Yankee Stadium. His final visit came about 14 months later, in 1948 when his number "3" was retired. Ruth passed away on August 28, 1948. The back of the photo has the stamp of photographer William C. Greene and handwritten in an unknown hand, in blue ink on paper or tape, "The Babe leaves the dugout." The 8x10" black & white photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. The photo is in EXCELLENT condition.
