The Baltimore Elite Giants were a storied baseball franchise in the Negro Leagues. Presented is a signed contract for the Elite (pronounced by fans and players as EE-LIGHT) Giants to play a game at Memorial Stadium on Sunday, May 7th, 1950. Playing in Baltimore from 1938-50, the team won league championships in '38 and '48. The team's home field was usually Baltimore's Bugle Field, but sometimes the franchise would play home games in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, home to the International League's Baltimore Orioles, and later the home of the American League's Baltimore Orioles. Ever since Jackie Robinson had signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and began to play in the International League for the Dodgers' Montreal Royals team, attendance in the Negro Leagues began to suffer. After Robinson's Major League debut on April 15, 1947, and Larry Doby's integration of the American League later that season, the Negro Leagues' attendance spiraled downward, and by 1950, teams that still existed were in only the Negro American League and struggling to stay afloat. The presented contract is on five typed pages, with the first three pages measuring approx. 8.5x12", and the other two pages measuring approx. 8.5x 10.5". All the pages are stapled together, and attached to an approx. 9x14" blue, card stock holder, with a few tears and with folds for storage or mailing. The first three pages spell out the terms and conditions of the contract. The price for the rental is fixed at the greater of either 20% of the gate or $1,000, whatever is the greater sum. The contract makes the Elite Giants responsible for all cleaning of the stadium, and all concessions, with the exception of game programs, will be run by the normal Memorial Stadium staff and the proceeds turned over to the Board of Recreation and Parks of Baltimore City. The Elite Giants produced four National Baseball Hall of Fame players: Roy Campanella, catcher; Biz Mackey, catcher; Willie Wells, shortstop; Ray Dandridge, third baseman. In addition, former Elite Giants were the '52 and '53 National League Rookie of the Year: Joe Black, pitcher, in '52 and Jim "Junior" Gilliam, a second baseman, in '53. The final two pages of the contract is a signed insurance certificate and its copy. The main contract is signed by Henryene P. Green and Richard D. Powell, team owners. After almost three-quarters of a century, the contract does exhibit some slight fading, but overall, the contract is in excellent condition. After the 1950 season, the Baltimore Elite Giants went out of business, and the Negro American League hung on for a few more years before becoming defunct. The contract is a fine remembrance of the Baltimore Elite Giants, who, even in their later years, had amassed great baseball talent.
