Photograph, taken by noted New York baseball photographer George Grantham Bain, capturing Christy Mathewson in action at the Polo Grounds, circa 1913. The photo is taken from the vantage point of the third-base grandstand, which allows one to see nearly the entire infield and the Bull Durham advertising sign on the rightfield fence. A George Grantham Bain credit stamp appears on the reverse. The handwritten notation reading "captions: Matty Pitching" appears in pencil on the reverse. (Please note that all the player images are too small to allow for facial identifications; the Mathewson identification is based solely upon the notation written on the reverse.) The photo (7.75x4.25"), which has been trimmed to its current dimensions, displays small chips to three of the four corners, small creases along the border areas, and heavy adhesive residue on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album.
