Presented is a 1925 Joe Jackson broadside advertising Jackson's appearance in an exhibition game on the Douglas A&M Campus in Douglas, Georgia. The broadside originated from the famous Joe Jackson scrapbooks that Lelands Auctions sold in 2015. Joe Jackson is one of baseball's all-time great players. In 13 Major League seasons, he played outfield for the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Naps, and Chicago White Sox, batting a lifetime .356, with a high average of .408 in 1911. Jackson was one of the Eight Men Out, the group of Chicago White Sox players banned for life from baseball for their involvement with gamblers who fixed the 1919 World Series. The broadside itself measures approx. 7.25x15". The broadside reads, BASE-BALL/SHOELESS JOE JACKSON CLUB (Waycross) versus DOUGLAS A. & M./The famous Joe Jackson will positively play in his game. Everybody wants to see "Brown Mule" Smith in action against this club. Shoeless Joe is one of the best players of all time and will give our people a chance to see how Major Leaguers perform. This will be a big day in Douglas, stores will close and everybody (sic) coming to the game./DOUGLAS THURSDAY, APRIL 2nd. A. & M. CAMPUS. Waycross won the game 22-2. Joe Jackson switched sides after a few innings and helped Douglas score the only two runs it got that day. The broadside is attached to one side of a front-and-back page from the Joe Jackson scrapbooks. This page measures approx. 11.75x16.5". It includes a number of articles mentioning Joe Jackson. One of the articles describes his playing for a semi-pro team called the Bastrop (Louisiana) Americus under the assumed name of Joe Johnson. Another describes his barbecue restaurant. The broadside and the front and back of the Joe Jackson album page show the effects of time. The newsprint has yellowed, but it is still clearly legible. There are assorted stains, small paper loss, folds, and some tears - some on the broadside and more on both sides of the detached album page. The album page has punched holes at the top, but also some tears, tape remainders, and glue remnants. Although the broadside and the album page exhibit rough wear, the vintage broadside, despite its imperfections, conveys the poignancy of Joe Jackson playing semi-pro baseball five years after he was banned from Major League baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
