Collection of documents and related material originating from the estate of Moe Berg, including several items that include writing in Berg's hand. Catcher Moe Berg (1902-1972) was one of the most enigmatic Major League players in history due to his second career as a spy with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was the forerunner to the CIA. Berg traveled extensively overseas during World War II in the service of the OSS, where his main objective was to provide information regarding Germany's ability to build an atomic bomb. This collection includes items relating both to his baseball and OSS occupations. 1) Photo (6x4.25") of Berg at the plate after making a tag on a runner during a demonstration with a group of Asian players. Berg's handwritten pencil notations on the reverse describe the play. VG, with two small pieces of clear tape on the reverse. 2) Declassified photocopy of Berg's 1932 passport application. Stamped several times on both the front and reverse marking it as declassified by the State Department. 8.5x14". VG-EX, with folds. 3) Photocopy of Berg's 1944 "Certificate of Identity of Noncombatant." Features both Berg's portrait photo and fingerprints. 8.5x11". VG. 4) Printed form, titled "Request for Flight Reservation," filled out in blue ink by Berg, including his printed name, rank, branch of service, destination (Rome), height, and weight. A blue-ink notation below reads "Special War Mission/Secretary of War" and bears the initials "JMW" below. A pencil notation on the reverse reads "Flight 211/Report at Orly at 0015/ETD 0100/Rome 0650/Berg." 8x5" VG, with three vertical folds. 5) One-page typed document, on onion skin, titled "Confidential - Headquarters/United Kingdom Base/Communications Zone/European Theater of Operations/APO 413, U.S. Army." The document is undated, but Berg is listed as one of four men who are scheduled to travel from London to Paris, where they will receive further orders. It is signed in blue ink by "Harry A. Granary" (Major, AUS.). 8x10.5". VG, with two horizontal folds. 6) Photocopy of an April 25, 1958, letter to Berg from the New York Air Procurement District/United States Air Force, providing him with his travel orders to France. 8x10.5". EX, with staple holes in upper left corner. 7) Two-page handwritten letter (entirely in French) on both sides of single sheet, dated "Paris 3 Mar 1945." The letterhead reads "Ecole Polytechnique/Laboratoire De Physique/L. Leprince-Ringulet, Professeur." The letter, which is not addressed to a specific individual, but presumably Berg, is signed "Louis Leprince-Ringulet," in blue ink. Leprince-Ringulet was a noted French physicist and his correspondence most likely was related to Berg's mission to discover all he could about Germany's nuclear capability at the time. 5.25x8.25". VG, with folds and a paperclip impression at the top border. 8) Six-page photocopy of an Italian document, dated 1942, that is stamped "Segreto" ("secret") in the upper left corner of the first page. Written entirely in Italian, the translated title reads: "Cathode Ray Tube Equipped with Radial Deviator Especially Suitable for Operation with Polar Coordinates." 5.5x7.25." VG, with pages stapled together. 9) Three-page document, no year listed, documenting a series of business expenses. The title reads "Report November 29 - December 6/Mayerling Business previously written - NOT PAID or PLAYED." 8.5x11". VG, with two horizontal folds and the pages stapled together. 10) Three-page recipe for Lasagne Verdi, written in pencil (presumably in Berg's hand) on three Western Union Press Message unlined sheets. The header reads "Hotel Majestic/Rome/Mogantini Giovavani (Chef)/Lasagne Verdi All E Miliano!" 8x10.5" VG, with two horizontal folds to each page. 11) Cloth "Shoe Cleaner" bag from "The Mayflower" hotel in Washington, DC." 5x7". EX. 12-13) Two separate envelopes, each addressed to Berg. One bears the return address of "Pax Film, Inc." and is postmarked "Jan 4 1939." 9.5x4" GD-VG, with a few minor tears. The other is postmarked from "Zurichberg" (Sweden). 7.5x5.5". 14) September 11, 1944, issue of The Stars and Stripes (Italy Edition). 11.5 x 16.5" VG.
