1947 Cy Young vintage signed, black & white photograph, a picture that was taken on his 80th birthday. Young is a Hall of Fame immortal who holds numerous all-time Major League records, among them: Wins (511) Losses (315), games Started (815), Complete Games (749), and Innings Pitched (7,356.0). Young was given the nickname Cyclone - later shortened to "Cy" - because as a young man in semi-professional baseball, he threw so hard it was like a cyclone. Young pitched 22 Major League seasons (1890-1911), with the majority of his time with the National League's Cleveland Spiders and the American League's Boston Americans (Pilgrims/Red Sox). In his Major League career, Young threw three no-hitters, including a perfect game. Young took part in the first "modern" World Series, in 1903 as a member of the Boston Pilgrims. The offered signed photograph measures 2.75x4.4". The offered photo was possibly taken on the Benedum Farm, an Ohio farm owned by friends of Young where the great pitcher lived for years after his retirement until he passed away in 1955. In 1956, the Cy Young Award was created and given to the best pitcher in baseball (the Brooklyn Dodgers' Don Newcombe), and starting in 1967, the Cy Young Award was given to the best pitcher in each Major League. Young signed the offered photo in black ink, faded but still legible. There is some additional writing on the front of the photo, by an unknown hand, but the writing is illegible. On the front, it's unclear what was written under his photo. On back, an unknown hand has printed; 80th Birthday March 29, 1947. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
