Offered is the opportunity to possess a terrific Yankee Stadium seat, one of the nicest we have ever seen. The original Yankee Stadium opened in 1923. The Yankees had shared the Polo Grounds, as tenants of the New York Giants, for ten seasons, and with a tremendous drawing card in Babe Ruth, the Yankees were eager to have their own stadium. When Yankee Stadium was built, the Yankees switched to their new home field, located in the Bronx, across the Harlem River from the Polo Grounds. The Yankees had the original Yankee Stadium as the team's home for 26 of their World Championships. The original Yankee Stadium hosted the 1938 Joe Louis-Max Schmeling Heavyweight Championship, the July 4th, 1939 - Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day - when Gehrig gave his famous "I am the luckiest man on the face of the Earth" speech, Don Larsen's 1956 perfect World Series game, and myriad other great events. The offered item has a curved back with an extra-wide seat, at 23.5" across. The original blue paint has a beautiful patina; the green paint underneath can be seen at various chips to the blue paint. The seat has a stenciled number 6. The seat has the original metal plaque affixed from when this was first sold during the 1973-74 Stadium renovation. The offering has all original wood and paint. These seats were originally offered for sale as a promotion with a cigarette brand whereas you could send in a number of proofs of purchase and a small amount of money and receive a seat. The seat back has a 1.5x3" plaque which reads, From YANKEE STADIUM/"The House That Ruth Built"/50th Anniversary 1923-1973. The seat is in very good condition, and it makes a wonderful addition to any sports collection.
