Pair of one-page typed letters, each dated September 20, 1951, and each signed by Jackie Robinson. These two letters, which are written on Robinson's personal letterhead, were addressed, respectively to a "Miss Leonore Pecoraro," and a "Mr. Mort Thaw." Each is worded identically and reads in full: "I received your letter and also the copy you sent to the Krueger Brewing Co. I wish to thank you for your interest and understanding. I find it most gratifying to know that there are people who think and feel as you do. You also have my deep appreciation for your kind thoughts." Both are signed "Jackie Robinson" in blue fountain pen (averaging 9/10). Each letter (7.5x10.5") displays two horizontal mailing folds. The letter to Mr. Thaw remains in Excellent to Mint condition. The other letter is toned, slightly trimmed, and displays tape remnants at each corner from having once been mounted in an album. Each letter is accompanied by its original mailing envelope, which is postmarked "Oct 5 1951." Individual full LOAs from PSA for each Robinson letter. The letters are accompanied by several related pieces, the most important of which is a two-page typed letter, dated September 16, 2003, from Leonore Pecoraro Canevari (the original recipient of one of the Robinson letters). In her letter (which is posted here on our website) she explains the circumstances which occasioned these letters from Robinson. As she recalls, Lorainne Day, who was the wife of Leo Durocher, hosted a sports show at the time. On one of her shows, she made a derogatory comment about Jackie Robinson and his attempt to enter a PGA-sanctioned tournament. The comment caused a groundswell of support for Robinson and a potential boycott of the show's sponsor: the Kruger Brewing Company. Robinson's supporters apparently wrote to him and enclosed a copy of their letter to the company threatening to boycott its product. The letters offered here are two of Robinson's thank you letters sent to his fans in appreciation of that support. Also included are a postcard from Red Barber (secretarially signed) to "Miss Pecoraro" stating that he will look into the matter, and a Christmas card sent to Pecoraro (circa 1951) from the Robinson family (filled out in Rachel Robinson's hand). (The Christmas card is mentioned in her letter of provenance).
