Displayed is a 1980-81 Jack Lambert special trophy, presented by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Club to the Pittsburgh Steelers' Lambert for being named as a linebacker on 1980 NFL All Pro team. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a middle linebacker, Lambert - at 6'4" and 203 lbs. as a rookie in 1974 - was considered too light to be a pro middle linebacker. Out of Kent State, Lambert took over as the Pittsburgh Steelers' middle linebacker in his rookie season because of an injury to starter Henry Davis. The Steelers that year usually ran the "Tampa Two" defense, with two safeties deep, and the corners playing bump and run or a close zone. Usually, Lambert's job in this defense was to drop back and cover the area before the safeties, something ideally suited for his speed and build. Lambert became a key member of the Steelers' "Steel Curtain" defense, a unit which helped the Steelers to win four Super Bowls in the 1970s (IX, X, XIII, XIV). Lambert was named to nine straight Pro Bowl teams, and he was named to the NFL's 100th Anniversary Team. Lifetime, he had a part in 1,429 tackles, with 28 interceptions. In the 1980 regular season, the Steelers went 9-7 and did not make the playoffs. That season, Lambert started at middle linebacker and had a pair of interceptions. The Jack Lambert Trophy is now given annually to each season's best collegiate linebacker. The offered metal trophy is 10.2" tall, with a base diameter of 6" and a top diameter of 8.7". The engraving on the trophy reads, JACK LAMBERT/LINEBACKER PITTSBURGH STEELERS ALL-PRO/Presented by Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Club/Feb. 8, 1981. The offered trophy came directly from Lambert. A Leonard maker's mark is stamped on the bottom of the base. The trophy weighs 62.75 ounces. The trophy has multiple areas of tarnishing but is otherwise is in EX condition.
